Jonathan R. Poole

Jonathan focuses his practice on litigation, education law, and employment law. He has represented colleges and universities in matters involving employment law, disability law, faculty misconduct, FERPA, Clery Act, student discipline, teacher discipline, tenure, regulatory compliance, accreditation, federal funding, governance, and risk management. He advises charter schools regarding governance and operational issues, as well as special education matters. Jonathan also routinely advises educational institutions in Title IX compliance matters, including assisting clients in preparing policies and procedures that meet state and federal requirements. He also provides advice, counseling, and training to faculty and staff on the law and their roles and responsibilities for coordinating their institution’s compliance efforts. Jonathan is the immediate past Chair of the School and College Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia and is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.

In employment matters, he defends employers before administrative agencies, and in state and federal courts through all stages of litigation, including trial, appeal, mediation and arbitration. He has successfully defended numerous discrimination cases arising under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as a variety of employment-related tort cases. He provides advice, counseling, and training to employers designed to minimize their exposure to claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, breach of contract, torts, and workers’ compensation.

Jonathan’s background also includes insurance defense and workers’ compensation. He has spoken at numerous employment law related programs, as well as published materials regarding employment law matters.

Jonathan was selected for inclusion in the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Georgia SuperLawyer Rising Stars list by Atlanta Magazine. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Atlanta Bar Association. He is also a member of the General Practice and Trial Law and the Labor and Employment Law Sections of the State Bar of Georgia. Jonathan served on the Executive Council and Board of Directors of the Young Lawyer Division of the State Bar of Georgia where he serves on the Executive Council and Board of Directors. In 2013, the YLD presented him with its Award of Achievement for Outstanding Service to the Public.

He received his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Georgia, and earned his J.D. cum laude from the Georgia State University College of Law. While in law school, Jonathan was Assistant Legislative Editor of the Georgia State University Law Review, and served as Chair of the Law Review Disciplinary Panel. Jonathan was awarded a Public Interest Law Fellowship and the Georgia State University Public Service Award for his pro bono work.
